Barry Lynwood Adams, of Calgary, AB, beloved husband, father and uncle, passed away at the age of 84 on Monday, June 2, 2025, in Calgary from heart complications. His family and friends will deeply miss him. He was known for his quick wit, jokes, loyalty, and love for hockey.
Barry was born and raised in Prince Albert, Sask. and surrounding areas. Barry attended local schools and joined the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) of the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 19. He married Marie McCarthy shortly thereafter in Cadogan, AB, where Marie was raised and born nearby in Provost, AB. Barry and Marie were married for 63 years. While in the military, Barry, Marie, and their family, after living in Edmonton, AB, moved every 3-4 years, including to Germany, Petawawa, ON, and Calgary, AB (in 1970 and 1979), where they settled.
Barry had 2 careers throughout his life. His 23-year span as a military hero was impressive, achievIng the rank of Warrant Officer. Barry obtained his paratrooper wings in 1960 with the PPCLI, served on a peacekeeping tour in Cyprus, and was Chief Administrator for the 427 Tactical Helicopter Squadron in Petawawa and the Service Battalion, ending his career in Calgary. Barry was awarded five medals (12-year service, UNFICYP, CCM, SSM, and CPSM).
Barry’s second twenty-year career was with Monarch Messenger in Calgary, where he was one of the company’s long-standing, trusted contract couriers. He routinely swapped stories with his customers and friends about his favourite Calgary Flames.
Barry and Marie’s second home was their beloved trailer at Spur Valley, BC, where they spent the last 22 years making friends and enjoying the warm weather.
Barry is survived by his loving wife, Marie, his twin sons, Tracey Garry (Louise) and Troy Barry; his daughter, Angela; and his granddaughter, Justine (Kieran). He is also survived by his sisters, Audrey (Allan), Donna (Greg), and Judy (Randy); as well as his brothers, Doug (Linda) and Greg (Rhonda).
Barry was predeceased by his fathers, Gordon and Doug Adams; his mother, Clela Adams; his daughter-in-law, Bettylou Benz Adams, Troy’s wife; and his son-in-law, Sean Roberts, Angela’s common-law husband.
A funeral for family and friends will be held at Barry and Marie’s St. Marks Catholic Church – 5552 Madigan Dr. NE Calgary, on Friday, June 27, 2025, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. A light reception will be held at this location thereafter.
