Bessie (Bess) Alexandria Moss

March 10, 1917 — July 4, 2022

March 10, 1917 – July 4, 2022

Bess passed away in the early morning of July 4, 2022 at Prince of Peace Manor, Calgary, Alberta after a brief battle with cancer.

Born on March 10, 1917, the seventh of eight children of Henry George Surman and Sarah Beattie Surman of Toronto. A raucous family, full of music and life.

Bess married John (Jack) Stanfield Moss in May of 1941 and lived at the “Beach” in Toronto. She helped her parents and family by looking after her nieces who lived close by. Bess and Jack were relocated to Hamilton and in June 1954 she gave birth to a daughter, three months later they were transferred to Montreal.

They bought a home in the west end of Montreal. The family thrived in this great neighborhood until Jack’s untimely and sudden death in June 1962, Bess decided to stay in Montreal to raise their daughter.  She worked part time and took in boarders to make ends meet.

In 1977 she moved to Toronto with Art Holt, an old family friend. Together they played golf, wintered in Florida and travelled the world, Art passed in 1998. After the passing of Art, she continued to play golf, dance at the Legion every Saturday night, help her neighbors with their shopping and visited her two older sisters until they too passed on.

In 2013 she moved to Calgary to join her daughter Judith and her husband Ralph. In 2015, she moved to Prince of Peace Manor where she engaged in all the activities, making many friends along the way.

Although having contracted COVID twice and dealing with a broken ankle and leg, she carried on until her death on Monday July 4, 2022. She fought the “good fight” to live right up until her death.

And what a life she led!

Bess is survived by her daughter Judith and her husband Ralph Kuhles of Calgary. She is fondly remembered by her nieces Brenda Gallant and Helen Sheppard and her nephew Rick Surman all in Ontario and her special friend “Salmon” Sue Smith of British Columbia.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Prince of Peace who were exceptional in the care of Bess throughout her time there, but especially in the last few days.

In her memory, enjoy a cocktail, have a dance, and if you wish, make donation to your favorite charity, in her name.

At her request there is no service, as cremation has taken place.
