Cochrane, AB

Dennis Elia Anaka, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, AB, surrounded by his cherished family. Born on June 19, 1946, in Kelvington, SK, Dennis led a life that profoundly touched those around him.

Dennis enjoyed a distinguished career as a Calgary Correctional Officer with the Alberta Government Department of Justice, where he served diligently before retiring. He was not only known for his professional dedication but equally for his generosity and warmth; he would help anyone and everyone, earning the respect and affection of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. A notable member of both the Cochrane Lions Club and the Cochrane Legion, Dennis was woven into the fabric of his community, where his many contributions will be remembered.

Educated in Social Work, Dennis applied his knowledge and compassion in various aspects of his life. He moved to Cochrane in 1971 when the population was only 1,000, witnessing the community grow and thrive. As an original member of the Cochrane Cougars Fastball team, he not only played the game that he loved but also played a role in building what is now known as the Rodeo North Ball Diamond. Additionally, he cherished his time on the rink as a player for the Cochrane Ranchman Hockey team, proudly sporting the number 13 for many years.

Beyond sports, Dennis was a passionate fisherman and hunter. He found great joy in reading Westerns and enjoyed spending time tinkering in his workshop, often indulging his penchant for garage sales, always on the lookout for treasures.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Annie Geraldine "Gerri" Anaka; his daughter, Leeza (Jeff); his son, David (Penny); and his grandchildren, Gabriel, Emma, and Tess. He also leaves behind his brother Wayne Anaka, sisters Karen (Henry) Boc and Darlene Boucher, and many extended relatives and cherished friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Anne and Alexander 'Elia', and his sister, Janette Clarke in 2004.

A Mass celebrating Dennis's life will be held on June 13, 2025, at St. Mary's Catholic Parish in Cochrane (10 River Heights Dr, Cochrane, AB) starting at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dennis's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
