March 4, 1962 – March 10, 2014

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Gerald M. Chernecki, beloved father, son and brother on March 10, 2014 at the age of 52 years following a long and painful battle with Major Depressive Disorder.

Gerald is survived by his precious daughter, Joella, by his parents Michael (Mickey) & Josephine Chernecki, his sisters Janice (Todd) Wilson and Jacqueline Onagi as well as his special nieces and nephews Blaine Wilson, Madison Onagi, Courtney Wilson and Cayden Onagi. Gerald had a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews and would go out of his way to always make the kids feel important. When he spent time with them he could ‘let his hair down’ so to speak, get on the floor and assemble elaborate lego creations, build those forts in Pa and Grandma’s basement, carve a pumpkin, paint his face blue and transform himself into the ultimate hockey superfan. Each of the kids adored their Uncle Gerald and have beautiful memories of the times they shared together.

Gerald was born on March 4, 1962 in Dauphin, MB. He graduated from high school in 1980 and went on to the University of Manitoba, graduating with honors from the School of Dentistry in 1986. Gerald worked very hard his entire life and proudly built up his dental practise (Spring Hill Dental Centre) along with his dental school chum Dr. Morris Hucal over the past 25 years. He served on the Board of Directors, Calgary District Dental Society and was a highly skilled and respected professional. His patients often commented on his gentleness and his caring nature. He was the dentist that called his patients at home following difficult procedures, just to make sure they were doing alright. He took very little time off from work but when he did, he LOVED to golf. He was a member of Bearspaw, and would trim his workdays down to eight hours during golf season, enjoying countless days on the course with many dear friends. Trips to Phoenix, Las Vegas and South Carolina were frequent in recent years, just to get away for a couple of days and enjoy a few rounds on the links with his buddies or dental associates.

Gerald also kept in contact with his old high school buddies. Some of these friends moved to distant places in North America and beyond but they all put in efforts to stay in touch. In 2012, they all turned 50 and ventured off to Italy to celebrate how great they all looked with bald foreheads.

Gerald will be missed dearly by his family, his friends, his professional associates and all of his patients.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Dr. S.E., Calgary) on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Lunch Reception and Program to follow also at the church. Interment of Gerald’s Cremated Remains will take place at sunset (7:00 p.m.), at the Cochrane Cemetery.

The family wishes to acknowledge the efforts of Dr. Kent Sargeant for all the help he had provided to Gerald through the years.
