December 29, 1944 — April 16, 2024

Cochrane, Alberta

It is with great sadness, love, and gratitude that we announce the passing of Frank Hansen on April 16, 2024, at the age of 79. Born in Aklavik, NWT on December 29, 1944, the fourth of 12 siblings, Frank's early life in the Arctic led to him having a strong work ethic, and a deep love and respect for the land, and his community.

After graduating high school in Inuvik, Frank moved to Edmonton, earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta in 1969, and would later receive P.Eng status. He began his career in the oil and gas industry, notably working on the feasibility study for the proposed Mackenzie Valley Pipeline. This experience laid the groundwork for his entrepreneurial journey, leading him to establish Hansen Petroleum Products Limited in 1974. For over two decades, HPPL serviced residents and businesses in the Mackenzie Delta.

In addition to his full time role, Frank contributed to numerous Northern businesses and projects. He played a significant role in managing the Inuvialuit Investment Corporation for 20 years, Chairman of the Inuvialuit Development Corporation and the Norterra Group of Companies, and held board memberships at NorthwesTel, Canadian Aboriginal Economic Development, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the NWT Arts Council, the Science Advisory Board of the NWT, and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

In recognition of his extensive contributions to business and community development, Frank received numerous accolades, including an award from Indspire (ex National Aboriginal Achievement Awards) at their annual gala in 1995.

Beyond his professional endeavours, Frank was a beloved figure in his community, known for his musical talent and athletic pursuits. Alongside a violinist originally from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, he co-founded Strings Across the Sky, a program dedicated to reviving fiddling across the Arctic. He participated in local sports such as Fastball, curling, and loved travelling to go downhill skiing.

Frank greatly enjoyed being out on the land, whether on snowmobile, boat, or on his houseboat "The Barge". Hunting and fishing in the Delta with family was where he loved to be. Most of all, Frank loved his family unconditionally. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership, service, and inspiration. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him as a role model, mentor, and friend.

A celebration of Frank's life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the MS Society of Canada www.mscanada.ca
