April 14, 1937 – January 18, 2012
It is with deep sadness that the family of Katharine Keitges announces her unexpected passing due to natural causes. She was born in Kerrobert, SK to Hugh and Jean Laing, attended the country school of Avoca until her family moved to Nakusp, BC. Upon high school graduation in 1955 at Nelson, BC, Katharine moved to Calgary, completed her business course at Mount Royal College and embarked on a long career in the oil patch, namely at Wainwright Producers & Refiners Ltd., Pamoil Ltd., CIGOL and Norcen Energy Resources; she also had worked part-time at the Calgary Public Library, conducted surveys/polls, & assisted at municipal,
provincial and federal elections. After early retirement, Katharine worked at Calgary Airport Authority until 2002. In retirement Katharine enjoyed the fellowship of CARP, Kerby Centre, Pro-Arts Calgary, Deerfoot Estates and other organizations. But it was the Calgary Stampede that truly was Kathy’s highlight each year and she became Kelly Sutherland’s most ardent fan! She is survived by brothers Bruce and Kent Laing and by nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and siblings Anne Whatley, Donald Laing, infant Jimmy Laing, Doreen South, and Jack Laing. She will be fondly remembered as a neighbor, a friend, a working colleague, a volunteer, and a devoted family member. At her request, there will be no funeral; however, a tea in her honour will be held at the Calgary Petroleum Club from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2012 (parking available). In lieu of flowers, a donation in her memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta or Osteoporosis Canada, Alberta Chapter.
