September 22, 1935 – September 30, 2019

Shortly after celebrating his 84

th

birthday Don died peacefully on September 30

th

.

Don will be deeply missed by his children, Allison (Bryan) and John (Judy); his beloved grandchildren: Nick, Blair, Olivia and Ray; and his wife, Lori MacDonald (White). His love was felt by many, especially his brother Rankin, nieces Kelly and April, and nephew Matthew; and step-children Lauren, David and Andrew Maris.

He was predeceased by his parents, John F. and Mary Florence MacDonald, his brother Jack MacDonald, and his loving aunt Sadie.

Don was born in Inverness, Nova Scotia, receiving his bachelor degree from St FX, and his law degree from Dalhousie. In 1959 he moved to Red Deer where he was a lawyer for almost 30 years. His next move was to Calgary in 1991 where he started his second career at the Calgary Drop-In Centre. He was a manager of employment services at the DI until his mid 70’s and described those years as some of the best of his life. It enabled him to live out his passion for social justice and his belief that everyone is deserving of being treated fairly and with dignity. If you were close to him, he made you feel special.

There were a few things that were particularly special to him – family, chocolate, watching sports (big fan of the Edmonton Oilers) and the love of his grandchildren. He had the most amazing sense of humour and literally laughed and made others laugh until his final breath. Don had a passion for the outdoors where he spent many years hunting, fishing, and camping.

A private family ceremony will be held in Calgary. His children and grandchildren will bring him home to Inverness, Nova Scotia to his final resting place in the family plot, next to the Inverness Raceway and the sulkies. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Calgary Drop-In Centre, or similar organization that provides those that are vulnerable with hope, love, and community.

Arrangements entrusted to Cochrane Country Funeral Home, Florence (Flo) Simpson, Funeral Director. Ph: 403-932-1039. To order memorial trees or send flowers to the family in memory of Donald (Don) Aubrey Macdonald, please visit our flower store.
