November 25, 1941 – September 6, 2023

With sadness we announce that George Alexander Stainger passed away peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre in Cochrane, Alberta at the age of 81 years.

George was born in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan and spent his youth in the Exshaw area with his parents and two brothers, Wes and Charlie. He eventually gained employment in the Kananaskis area, working for CP Rail.

The Stoney Nakota Nation gained a friend when George began working at the Stoney Trading Post. George enjoyed the people he met and being a part of the local community. He retired from work after a long working career in the Bow Valley area.

George loved his days spent working with the animals on local farms, joining in at special events and celebrations. He also enjoyed a good day of fishing and was always excited to watch a rodeo in the summer.

George especially loved hockey. You could find him regularly watching the Cochrane Generals and local minor hockey games in the area. His dedication to hockey took him to Germany, Austria and Czech Republic to cheer on local Cochrane players at minor hockey tournaments.

Always an avid Calgary Flames fan, he was proud of his Flames Collectibles that he collected over the years, mostly gifts from friends that made them especially special to George.

Watching and cheering for the Flames brought such joy to George and he spent his time at Bethany keeping track of the season, teasing rival team’s fans and thinking of solutions of how the team could improve their game.

George was predeceased by his mother, father and brother Wes. He is survived by his brother Charlie and many special friend and neighbours.

George left many memories with the Milan family of Cochrane. They will forever cherish the laughs, adventures and joy that he gave them.

The community members of Morley and area will remember his smile and easy-going personality.

The staff of Cochrane Bethany, who cared so well for him and made him feel at home in his final years, will remember his willingness to lend a helping hand and promoting a close-knit community.

A private Celebration of George’s Life will be held at a later date.
