Muriel Elizabeth Thorne (Downes) passed away peacefully August 4, 2012 at the Foothills Hospital after a lengthy battle with her health. Her struggle is over and she is finally in God’s loving arms.

Muriel was pre-deceased by her husband Tom, and her parents Walter & Amelia Downes.

Muriel was devoted to and took great joy in her family. She is survived by her sons Jim (Patrizia), and Alan ( Margaret), her grandchildren Erin (Tassilo), Tyler (Erin) & Alisha (Tanner), and her great grandchildren Lane, Cassidy & Keira. She is also survived by step grand daughters Cassandra (Gordon), & Melissa as well as step great grandchildren Breanne, Nicholas, Olivia, Morgan & Ryan.

Muriel was born and raised in Calgary where she married Tom in 1957. They moved to Burnaby, BC in 1959 where they resided until Tom’s death in 1963. Muriel and her sons returned to Calgary to be closer to her parents. She worked for the Workers Compensation Board for 22 years, retiring in 1986. She spent the next several years travelling, seeing Australia, Asia & Europe as well as many points in North America.

Muriel was very proud that both her sons chose a career in law enforcement with the Calgary Police Service. In 2000 she chose to move to Cochrane to be closer to her family. She remained in Cochrane until 2007 when she moved into the Manor at Rocky Ridge in Calgary. Muriel remained there until her health caused her to return to Cochrane in 2012 where she lived at Big Hill Lodge.

A memorial service celebrating Muriel’s life will be held at Cochrane Country Funeral Home, #6-402 Railway Street West, on Saturday August 11, 2012 at 11:00 am, with a reception to follow at the Cochrane Legion.
